These Chairs Have History

For about 5 years now these two chairs have been sitting on my back porch so they are real ragged. I should take better care as they have a unique history. Over 20 years ago I was driving by a warehouse on Tchoupitoulas Street  in New Orleans. They were clearing it out of tables, sewing machines and lots of these chairs. I stopped and asked if I could buy a chair and the manager gave me two that needed TLC. Originally they were painted an off or faded white. He told me the place was a sewing factory during WWII that made uniforms. At one time New Orleans was full of places that made clothing. The equipment and chairs were shipped in when a factory in the North East closed up. If you look close you will see the chairs were wired up. He said the old glue and maple wood did not work well in a humid climate so they drilled holes and wired supports to keep them together. A good solution as they have held together all this time. Unconformable as they are I am sure there were cushions on the seats back when woman sat on them making uniforms 80 years ago. I should take better care of them.
